Mikey O'Connell is the TV Features Editor at The Hollywood Reporter, where he's held several positions since joining the magazine in 2011. Though his primary focus is covering the television industry, he frequently explores culture and film — writing and reporting features, news, interviews and profiles, as well as overseeing many annual editorial packages such as the Hollywood's 50 Most Powerful Showrunners issue. Mikey also manages weekly Q&A franchise Creative Space and wonders how many days will pass before his parents notice this new bio. (He'll report back on that.)

‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Showrunner Unpacks That Open-Ended Finale
[This story contains spoilers from the season finale of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.] Prime Video unloaded all eight episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Feb. 2 — and, given the short order and relatively propulsive nature of the spy drama, it’s likely that more than a few viewers plowed through the entire run. That’s […]

How Francesca Sloane Reimagined a More Relatable ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’
Updating a 2005 action movie, one most remembered for a tabloid frenzy inspired by the on-set romance between its stars, was not on Francesca Sloane’s to-do list. And yet, Donald Glover called her a few years ago with that very proposition. Sloane had been writing and producing on the final two seasons of Atlanta, a […]

Dave Burd Is Taking a Long Break From His FX Comedy
It sounds more like “Bye, I’m Dave,” at least for now. Dave Burd — Lil Dicky, if you prefer — is taking a step back from his FX comedy after three seasons. It’s not a cancellation, those close to the show are quick to point out, but there are no plans for a return of Dave […]

Next Big Thing: Aaron Pierre Tackles Icons Real (Malcolm X) and Cinematic (Mufasa)
Come Feb. 1, Aaron Pierre joins the ranks of storied British thespians — Daniel Day-Lewis, Cynthia Erivo, David Oyelowo — to play icons of U.S. history. This trend has rankled some American performers in the past. But, as the 29-year-old sees it, he’s just as qualified as any Black actor to tackle Malcolm X. “My […]

How Gus Van Sant Earned His Rep as “The Mellowest Man in Hollywood”
Gus Van Sant has taken on a few superlatives over the course of his 40-year career: indie provocateur, Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker and, per the late Robin Williams, “mellowest man in Hollywood.” A label that long eluded the 71-year-old director, despite his line of work, was Angeleno. Van Sant built one of the more eclectic résumés in […]

The long-reigning queen of syndication is returning to her roots. Judge Judy Sheindlin has inked a multiyear deal to put her streaming effort, Freevee original Judy Justice, on broadcast channels in more than 100 U.S. markets this fall. This is, of course, a double-dipping scenario. Judy Justice will continue to premiere new episodes on Amazon’s […]

Emmys Producers on the ‘Friends’ Dilemma, Mama Doris and the Show That Really Almost Wasn’t
All it took was a scan of social media or a few afterparty conversations on Monday night to learn that the 75th Primetime Emmys, delayed four months by the Hollywood strikes, were worth the wait. The three-hour Fox telecast, which went over well with critics, was polished, moved at a nice clip, featured talent from […]

Emmys: The Ovations, Flubs and Everything Else the Cameras Missed
On Monday evening, the biggest names in television — and Anthony Anderson’s mom, Doris — congregated at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater for the 2023 Emmy Awards. But with so many A-listers on hand, the cameras could only catch so much for viewers at home. Here’s what they missed: — It appears that that capital T […]

Roy Wood Jr. confirmed his fans’ lip-reading skills on Monday after Emmy Award audiences caught him mouthing what appeared to be a plea from stage for a new Daily Show host. Trevor Noah famously left The Daily Show in December 2022, but the Emmys delay means the Television Academy is only now honoring the 2022-23 […]

His days playing Aquaman may very well be over, but Jason Momoa isn’t exactly desperate to add more to his dance card.
